Step 1: Remove the following fasteners and lift the front bulk head panel up and out.
* Some 1987 E30s are equipped with fuel-cooling lines that run across the bulkhead and connect to the A/C lines. Neither the metal lines nor the rubber hoses need to be removed. Simply release the fuel-cooling lines from their retaining clips and gently swing them aside—the brackets provide enough clearance to access and remove the blower motor.
Step 2: Cut the extra retaining plastic strips and unclip the cover straps.
Step 3: Remove the blower cover by first pushing the cover down and then forcing the top of the cover out first. The cover will bend (not permanently) ever so slightly existing at the top.
Step 4: Pull out the blower motor resistor with a pair of pliers. Nothing retains it other then just pushing/pulling it out of its socket.
Step 5: Disconnect metal retaining bracket, cut cable zip tie and two electrical connectors.
Step 6: Pull out blower motor slightly towards the passenger side, its a tight fit and the blades might bend a bit going in and out – they are generally very flexible and wont break or deform.
Step 7: Almost certainly the metal retention clip will fall off while removing the blower motor. When slotting it back into the back, it is ultra counter intuitive – there is a metal bracket back there, that is NOT where the metal retention clip slots into, it slots into the slot above that metal bracket.
Step 8: Utilize a zip tie or string to hold the front of the metal retention spring up and out of the way (yet still slotted in the back) to allow you space to put the new blower motor in.
Step 9: Reconnect the two electrical connectors, clip in the metal retention bracket, put the new resistor back in, and put a new zip tie onto the wires to hold them to the metal retention bracket if you wish.
Step 10: Everything in reverse now, put the blower cover back on, reapply the two straps, then the bulk head cover and you’re done.
