Most automotive hydraulic applications use a copper or aluminum washer for sealing. The idea is that the two surfaces are near perfectly flat and all that is needed is a hint of squished copper or aluminum.
A small gouge, unevenness, or slop in the mounting threads can mean the squish of a copper or aluminum washer may not be enough.
So what is one to do?
Dowty seals, also known as bonded washers. The washer is made of carbon steel with a self centering washer made of Nitrile (NBR), Viton (FKM, FPM), or EPDM.
They can handle operating pressures of up to 20,000 PSI which generally covers all automotive use cases.
