There are two main automotive fuel standards: one commonly referenced in North America (SAE) and the other in Europe (DIN). While these standards overlap in many aspects, they use very different naming conventions.
Fuel hoses are typically categorized by pressure (low or high), permeation levels (low or high), and whether they are designed for use inside or outside of the fuel tank (submersible or non-submersible).
In general, hoses designed to be submerged in fuel tanks are not ideal for use outside the tank. This is because they have lower heat resistance and cannot withstand the high temperatures found in engine bays.
The DIN naming convention is more specific about the hose details, including the manufacturing date and the materials used. In contrast, SAE-marked hoses only indicate compliance with the standard, without providing additional specifics.
Din 73379-1 Standards:
The best unsubmerged hose is Type 3A-3E.
SAE J30 Standards:
For modern fuel injection (unsubmerged) you generally want to run J30R9, but be aware there can be sub definitions like CARB Approved (low permeation) and USCG approved (2.5min burn rating).
Japan uses a JASO standard, that is much like the DIN standard, but the hoses contain less detail; but importantly still show the hose inner and outer layers. One good Japanese OEM source for FKM/ECO hose (unsubmerged) is Nissan part # A6D40-N7686.
